“Here is a company that clearly puts the audience at the centre of the experience and this gives them real artistic credibility.” (National Operatic and Drama Association).
Who we are
Southside Players is a non-professional theatre group, with over 35 years of experience, bringing high quality ‘drama to your doorstep’ in Balham and South Clapham. We are the recipient of a number of awards, including the NODA (National Operatic and Dramatic Association) Flame Award for productions of a ‘memorable and staggering stature’.
Launched in 1987, Southside’s 10 founding members were part of central London’s Intervarsity drama group. After discovering they all lived in south west London, they broke away and formed what became Southside Players! Performing for many years in St Luke’s Church Hall, we eventually moved to Chestnut Grove School in 1999 and have been there ever since.
Our play choices are designed to appeal to both group members and the audience, and we have performed a wide range of genres, ranging from Greek drama, through Shakespeare, early 20th century playwrights, to farce and pantomime. We also hold regular rehearsed readings which are often experimental!
We pride ourselves on breaking new ground, on and off stage – check us out on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. You can also see our online Short and Sweet plays on YouTube, produced during the 2020 lockdown.
We welcome everyone, whatever your capacity, skills or experience. All our main stage plays are cast through open auditions which you can find about on this site as and when they arise.
However, we also pride ourselves on retaining members by encouraging and developing them to take on more challenging roles, both on and off stage. Members are actively encouraged to help backstage or front of house when not cast, or develop skills in costumes, or technical stuff.
“Southside have great talent both on and off the stage.” (Sardines magazine).
